Team GB's Molly Thompson-Smith placed 5th in the latest round of the IFSC Lead World Cup in Wujiang, China – her best result yet in what is proving to be a highly successful season for the 19 year old.
Having qualified for her first World Cup final in Arco, Italy a few weeks ago where she placed 8th, Molly proved herself capable of achieving consistently high placings in Wujiang following a 9th place in Edinburgh last month. She told UKC:
'I was really excited to make my second final in China. It was hard to make the first but it's more challenging to be consistent and make another, so I'm pleased I was able to have another good competition! The routes were more old school and powerful which made them enjoyable to climb.'
In a strong line-up of finalists, Molly finished ahead of many well-established names, including Ashima Shiraishi (USA), Jessica Pilz (AUT) and Anak Verhoeven (BEL). Slovenia's unstoppable Janja Garnbret and Stefano Ghisolfi of Italy were the Wujiang winners. Molly is now in Shanghai for a few days before the next World Cup round in Xiamen.
She added: 'I'd love to have another good weekend of climbing in Xiamen!'
A few weeks ago, Molly announced her selection as a Sky Sports Scholar, which she hopes will assist her in climbing full-time and achieving her goals as she works towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In each of the last three rounds of the series, Team GB has been represented in the final by one woman, with Molly qualifying in Arco and Wujiang and 18 year old Hannah Slaney making finals in Edinburgh and placing 7th. Molly is currently ranked 9th in the 2017 series, having missed the first round in Chamonix.
