22 year-old student Maya started climbing 11 years ago when her brother was given a climbing session for his birthday and she went along too. They both really enjoyed it and started going to kids sessions at Undercover Rock in Bristol and have been climbing ever since.
Maya has gone on to take first place in a number of climbing competitions, including The Climbing Academy 2011 Summer Bouldering Competition, and the Lead Climbing and Bouldering categories at the Boulders Cardiff First Birthday Competition in 2009. Out on the rock she has redpointed up to F7b, including the classic Cheddar Gorge routes Skullduggery and All Hands to the Pump.
“I really like the physical challenge of climbing and also the need to be totally mentally focused to succeed on a hard route. I love the variety of climbing and all the different places it takes me, some that you probably wouldn't have found or gone to if you hadn't seen them in a climbing guidebook! I also love being part of the climbing community, always meeting new people as well as seeing familiar faces, whether at the crag or at your local wall.
I mainly sport climb and really enjoy it and there is so much around where I live. I can be very determined, so working sport routes really suits me, I like the challenge of pushing past my limits and the feeling of achievement when I eventually get there. Where I'm from in Bristol, the rock is pretty much all limestone, which is probably why I really like crimpy technical limestone climbing! I do want to get into bouldering and trad climbing more and being back at Uni in Lincoln now, I'll be trying to get out and onto the grit this winter.
I'm really excited to be sponsored by Rab and looking forward to being involved with such a fantastic company. It's particularly great for me because Rab is so well known for its superb insulation pieces and when out on the crag I always seem to get cold before anyone else! I am so looking forward to this winter and not being the first person to get cold when I'm out climbing – so from now on I can just focus on the climbing without worrying about the freezing!”
Nikki Skinner, Rab's Marketing Manager, added: “We are committed to supporting the UK's up and coming climbing talent – those individuals with the drive to push themselves and their climbing to the next level. Maya is incredibly dedicated and passionate about her climbing and will fit in really well with the Rab team - she's also great fun! We are really looking forward to working with Maya over the coming months and years.”
