Eden Rock, Carlisle: Opening Event THANK YOU

We would like to thank everyone who came along and showed their support for our grand opening on Saturday; here is a round up of the day's events.

At 11am the Mayor of Carlisle arrived (running over the wet floor sign, but we'll get over that) and had a tour of the wall. The climbers, coffee drinkers and photographers all arrived and we stepped outside for the cutting of the ribbon. The main photographer from the News and Star captured the moment, with customers and staff in the background cheering and the wall was officially opened!

Once we were all back in the warmth of the wall, the Mayor had a go at climbing on the competition wall. He would have liked to have stayed to cruise the new wooden circuit but had other business to attend to. After the Mayor left the building, the competition began.

Entrants were greeted with free event t-shirts supplied by Eden Rock and a Cotswold goody bag, handed over by Bill who was kindly lent to us by Cotswold for the day. We would like to say a very big thank you to Bill, who also brought in a large selection of doughnuts to give away. Needless to say all of our top athletes stayed well away from those (not).

Our competition featured Beastmaker holds, all hand made by our own Dan Varian. We have had a lot of excellent feedback about the wooden circuit so if you didn't make the grand opening, the Beastmaker circuit will be up for 8 more weeks so come along and try it out.

Scarpa kindly offered to run a boot demo and also donate prizes for the winners of the competition. Many people tried on pairs of shoes, including the brand new Instinct VS. We had some excellent feedback on these and hope to see people in them soon.

A highlight of the day was definitely the fancy dress costumes. We had Dan as a new and improved Telly Tubby, know as a Beta Tubby - charging 50p to watch any problem being done on his ipad-looking belly. All Beta Tubby money raised will be donated to local mountain rescue. We also had a giant penguin, Ron Fawcett (not the real one) and Nicole as a very fashionable 80's climber. The winner of the fancy dress competition was Joseph Mullholland who won a Metolius yosemite chalk bag for coming as a soldier. Even one of Santa's little helpers came along. You can see all the costumes in the photographs of the day's events.

Ian Denton crushed (his knees) in the Knee Bar comp and clung on for 1 minute and 14 seconds winning a Black Diamond Speed 55L Rucksack, kindly donated by Rock and Run.

The winners and prizes of the main comp are as follows:

Senior Male:

Nick Clement - 208 - Pair of Scarpa shoes and Hoody

Rosie Helmore - 143 - Pair of Scarpa shoes and Hoody

Joseph Mulholland - 117 - Pair of Scarpa shoes

Mark Hetherington - 201 - Pair of Scarpa shoes and Hoody

Other winners in the raffle on the day were Gavin Gray won a MSR WindPro Stove (also donated by Rock and Run)

Liam Dervey with a Metolius boulder bucket goody bag

Rosie Rothwell with a Metolius boulder bucket goody bag

We finished off the night with loads of pizza and a showing of Life on Hold. We had a brilliant day and would once again like to thank the Mayor for opening Eden Rock and to everyone who came along. We would also like to thank our event sponsors; Scarpa, Outdoor Research, Metolius, Rock and Run and Cotswold.

We have a comfy cafe area to relax in with a slice of cake and some of the best coffee around.

Our opening event this Saturday will start off with The Mayor of Carlisle opening the wall at 11am, followed by our first ever climbing competition.

Fancy dress is a recommended option, as prizes will go to the best costumes.

During the day there will be a boot demo by Scarpa, yoga taster sessions and a physio will be on hand to chat about what she does and show you some techniques for keeping well.

The prizes will be handed out after the comp, then everyone can sit back and enjoy some well deserved pizza and watch the latest offering from Outcrop films 'Life on Hold'.

Entry for the day is £3.00 for members (membership is £3.50 if you haven't already joined). Limited competition T-shirts and Cotswold goodie bags are available, best come early so you don't miss out!
