Women's Climbing Symposium - November 3rd Press Release

The Women's Climbing Symposium returns to the Climbing Hangar in Liverpool on November 3rd for it's second instalment of advanced coaching techniques, climbing and informative lectures.

The event is the brain child of Shauna Coxsey (British Lead and Boulder Champion) and Stephanie Meysner (Climbing Hangar Director and Sociologist). Its mission statement is to increase female participation in climbing. It aims to do this through putting people in front of the best women climbers/coaches in Britain, providing the latest information on training and floating ideas that expand horizons and promote discussion.

This is how this years event looks:

Shauna Coxsey, Lucy Creamer, Leah Crane, Emma Twyford, Audrey Seguy, Suzan Dudink, Kitty Wallace and Diane Merrick - the collective CV of this team is staggering.

They will be coaching you on:

  • Footwork workshop - pulling on your feet on steep ground and trusting feet on poor holds
  • Dynamic climbing workshop - Not to be confused with dynos - this is about exploiting momentum to minimise strength needed to do moves.
  • Awkward/insecure holds - getting past the discomfort barrier to use holds that feel like they don't work.
  • Training for climbing - Using structure to maximise your gains from what time you do have to climb.

Talks:

  • Lucy Creamer - one of Britain's most accomplished rock climbers. Injury and identity - what happens when you can't climb?
  • Rebecca Dent - GB Team nutritionist. Food for fitness and health - keeping you firing on all cylinders.
  • Fran Brown - World ParaClimbing Champion. Her journey to the podium.
  • Shauna Coxsey - Nice Genes - a talk on what it means to be on the world cup circuit in terms of the the doors opened and the unexpected barriers.
  • Jos Vanrenterghem - Head of Biomechanics at LJMU. Explaining Shauna - is Shauna more normal than we think? Jos explores the question can women match/outperform men in climbing?
  • David Simmonite - Editor of Climber. Women in the Climbing Media - a deconstruction of what you see and why.

The day starts with registration 9-10am and ends at 6pm in the evening.

There are two comfort breaks and one lunch break. We have ordered in portaloos to prevent queues and lunch this year round is a far slicker affair with big pots of warming spiced squash dahl (vegan) and a roasted veg, white bean and chicken orzo cassoulet, speedily ladled into bowls with hot bread at £4 a pop.

There will be goody bags too and don't forget the What climbing means to me competition sponsored by Osprey to win a Mutant 28 backpack.

See you on the day!
