INTERVIEW: Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall on their Motorway Roof Crack - The Great Rift

In early November 2021, after a summer of recce trips and one previous attempt that ended halfway, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker climbed a horizontal roof crack over 2500 feet long (roughly the length of Half Dome in Yosemite). The line took the pair four days, with three nights on a portaledge. 'The Great Rift' — their proudest crack line to date — was on the underside of a six-lane concrete motorway bridge. Mark Bullock, who sent Tom Randall photos of the M5 bridge to sow the seed for their latest roof crack project, speaks to the 'WideBoyz' and finds out that this climb was significantly more than just another big tick...

To celebrate the launch of the Pac Plus XT and Fireball Jacket for AW'21 we're giving away a winter bundle to one lucky winner.

Using 100% recycled GORE-TEX PACLITE® PLUS technology, the Pac Plus XT Jacket balances low weight and packability whilst still being rich in mountain features such as a helmet hood, 3 pockets and pit zips which can be used for venting when working hard climbing, scrambling or mountain walking.

Adopting super breathable CLO VIVO EXTREME ECO synthetic insulation, the Fireball Jacket is designed as a reliable winter mid-layer or outer layer for in-between seasons. The unique construction of the CLO insulation regulates core body temperature effectively and the stretch FEATHERLITE™ Air outer fabric has a DWR that will shed light rain, making it an ideal insulation layer to keep you warm and comfortable when working hard in cold conditions.

Hong Kong added to Rockfax Digital - free until 31st December

We have just added a full guide to Hong Kong to Rockfax Digital. This fascinating destination has a huge variety of sport climbing on offer from big mountain crags, to seaside zawns; from delicate granite slabs to fierce overhanging caves.

The environment is a bustling city sitting amongst spectacular peaks and rocky coastlines. Climbing can be found on crags in an urban backdrop within minutes of the local bus or metro stop but also on remote islands which are only reached by ferry.

The project is a collaboration between Rockfax and Francis Haden of Climbing Bolt Supplies. Francis has produced a great printed book to the sport climbing on the island which we have now added to Rockfax Digital. Francis is also a major developer of climbing in the area having added hundreds of routes himself working with other local climbers.

The Rockfax Digital package will be available for free until the end of December for anyone with Rockfax Digital installed and subsequently as an ongoing part of our coverage. We are working with Francis on sustainable documentation for the climbing and hope to add an update in the future in conjunction with a new book.

To access the guide for free just go to the app store, download Rockfax Digital and sign in.
