Interesting looking rock.

It's sandstone, harder than usual, which sometimes has a very hard shellac veneer on it, as in the nearest foreground. If the veneer gets a hole in, the sandstone behind wears away faster and creates holes with very sharp edges. Dark Shadows round the corner is a great example of this.
