Chamonix campsite in the summer of 1972, the year of the Alpenstock brawl. Looking back it is hard to relate to the squalid conditions that we thought were the norm in those days. I can't remember where we got the water but there were certainly no toilets. As the season went on the piles of bongo in the woods multiplied exponentially and to avoid them you had to move like Fred Astaire! Happy days !

Great stuff - are you sure it wasn't 1973?
Eric and I arrived to a deserted Snells in early July - apparently a "raid" was expected as the previous night there had been chairs through windows, etc etc... although I think Alpenstock brawls were not too rare!
Water was off down a little track in the "real" campsite across the road that housed the Pierre d'Orthaz. It was a stream that somehow made it's way down the hillside.
My strategy was to find my own pristine spot in the woods - very annoying when someone else had the same idea and I had to move further afield!
