Ah now then Ian, you can add Jim to our list mutual friends! You're right, he was well respected and liked and was greatly missed when he died... Here's another of Jim - on Silly Arête (roped): http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=116743 He must have soloed it hundreds of times. There are a couple more of Jim in my gallery. Interestingly, his name wasn't Jimmy at all. It was Phil. He got the nickname from a comedian. This meant that another lad in the same club, named Jim, had to be called Junior to avoid confusion with Phil!

Yes Jon, from Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warris - I used to listen to them on the radio when I was at school. It was the BBC Light programme back then.

Many thanks for this - absolutely love seeing and hearing all too rare history of Big Jim, he was in our club Cave & Crag...
That pic of him in the Vaynol & Pete's of him soloing T-Rex blows my mind.
I'd love to go back in time to that golden era of climbing in Llanberis for a few weeks.

Mo introduced us and I remember that, among others that day, we climbed Great Western. To the right we observed Jim soloing one of those routes that went over the big overhang (perhaps Silly Arrete) and I was pretty impressed.
Talking later to people who knew him well it is obvious that, apart from being an ace climber, he was a much respected snd well liked person.
