Is he the chap who went on to be a professor of engineering at MIT who specializes in prostheses design? If so I heard a very interesting interview with him on NPR recently. He says he climbs harder now, on ice and rock, than before the accident!

Yes. During the two day search one of the rescue members died in an avalanche.

Great atmospheric photo Paul - I don't think most people realise how terible the weather can be on Mt Washington.

Yes - Herr talks about the guilt he felt for that death. It's a really interesting interview - http://www.npr.org/2011/08/10/137552538/the-double-amputee-who-designs-better-limbs

Mt Washington has the worlds highest surface wind on record of 231 MPH. The average wind speed in Jan is about 80 MPH. Wind chill can be -40c

Todd Skinner told me a great story about HH - in true Skinner style. Herr, equipped with specially sized 'feet' and wearing lycra tights attempted to on sight the famous Sphynx Crack. High up on it one of the feet became completely stuck. HH hung in there and tried to free it, but in vain. So he decided to carry on with one leg. Unfortunately, the leg was still firmly attached to the lycra - which stretched and stretched - but wouldn't come free of the offending prosthesis. Eventually he had to jump off. According to Todd, he never managed to regain his high point!
