How can this photo get a 4, when this gets the same score? http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=186644

Quite right. This is clearly worth more, the other's a picture of a hill from the same old viewpoint in dull flat light, whereas this has a human in an interesting position with a mixture of light and shade, nearly atmospheric, and with reasonable composition. I think you take it a bit too seriously. Besides, look at that arete!

Thanks Jon, yes the prow is brilliant!

Hi ITS. Thanks for the comment. Whilst TWOB has some great photos in his gallery, I don't think that's one of them. I think you're conflating notions of personal preference for a place, with objective photographic merit. A subjective view is inevitable, but is not particularly useful in ascertaining an images particular qualities. I'd rather be up in the northwest highlands myself, than in a grotty fly-tipped quarry, but I can only photograph what's in my viewfinder. I think this has more objective merit than that particular image of TWOB's for the reasons that Jon stated above. I think a better like for like comparison might be made with this recent image: http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=185810 which given its drama and good exposure, but despite being in a presumably equally grotty quarry, is surely of at least equal merit. Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom, I can see your point. I was only using your photo as an example, as after a few beers last night I got to thinking about why so many 4s and 5s are given to so many photo on the UKC site. I'm no expert. I suppose that the beer got me all serious about photo-votes, something that isn't really too important. All the best, Ian.

Nice photo(s). I'd been trying tomake kind of the same point in this recent thread: http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=482985&v=1#x6648633

Haha, fair play Ian, thanks. And cheers Fraser, thanks for pointing me at that thread, I'll have read :)

Thanks Tom, that would be from the copious amounts of bloody lacerations that the rock dished out across the day ;) Could hardly walk into work with all bruising from the kneebar on the other problem!
