It was my first time in the Alps and I was following my leader . We attempted to climb the Dent du Geant (c. 4000m) from the Requin hut (c. 2500m) - a logistical nightmare to say the least. It would have involved an altitude gain of almost 5,000 feet and going up and down the hideous Geant ice fall in one day - a bit like setting out to do Grooved Arete, your first V. Diff, and parking in Bethesda !
For that effort we well deserved to be given the award for ''Alpine Bozoes of the Year'' (or any other year for that matter). We didn’t get anywhere near the summit and it put me off the Alps for years !

Brilliant. Love the analogy.
The glaciers were a bit bigger then, to put it mildly.
But it looks as if you made good progress, nonetheless?
