There's something about stands of massive pines sitting on hillsides. I can't really put my finger on it; something old, gnarled and ancient. These ones feel more poignant against the brutalist interventions in the top of Glen Canaich. It's all concrete boxes, the bathtub ring of the reservoir and part-submerged forest remains. We should really look after the land better. It's apparently permissible to degrade the land, keep things the way that they are (whatever state it's in). But improving the biodiversity and forest cover is a bloody no-no because it butts up against the love of the deer hunt. Can't possibly do anything about that. We'll put it all behind a fence, problem solved? Sticking plaster more like.
Rant asides, these trees get it though. Something about them. There is way more to these beautiful big specimens than I could catch in a photo, so I'm pretty dissatisfied with the picture. Doesn't cut to the core enough. But I was guiding a group, so it was a quick 'pull out the SLR and shoot'. Weird how an inanimate place can bear a melancholy burden, even when the sun shines.
