An all-time classic portrait photo taken by Geoffrey Winthrop Young in 1913 of Herford and Mallory, after the three of them had done a new double traverse of Lliwedd in very wintry conditions. I went back to the same spot at PyP in November 2005 ...

5 for historical value.

I saw this photo somewhere nearly 10 years age ago. It seems to sum up what it's all about, chillin after a good day out!

The incredible thing is that they had just done a new double girdle traverse of Lliwedd, together with Winthrop Young who took this picture. I find it hard to believe that Mallory had been wearing those shorts on the climb! I suspect they had just been in the bar to warm up .. but the day is still light, and it's December ... Quite a mystery. Maybe it was before they set off? (Again, seems a bit unlikely). I suspect that WY was exaggerating, and that the shot was taken, say, the following morning.
