Back in the 70s this was arguably the centre of British alpinism

Is it possible to camp there now?

Back in the mid-70's the Biolay was definitely the centre of British Alpinism.

By the time I first went to Chamonix in 1976 the Biolay was shut & I had the impression it had been for a couple of years - anyone know when the Biolay shut/Snell's opened ?
Maybe Snell's was only the centre for the late 70s ?

Happy days. A bit smaller now with some flood work. Had a nostalgic visit in 2010, met a Scots family doing the same thing.
I think Snells took over in 1973 ( my first year ). I expected to go to the Biolet but it had just been cleared and everybody was at Snells. In later years ( 76 ? ) some folk drifted back to the Biolet, but Snells was always far busier.
When did the small ( paying ) campsite next to the boulder close?
