Wow! I thought I was the expert at lacing up a route - is there as much gear in that crack as it looks like?!

Hi Helen, IIRC that wired was jammed in from a previous attempt from another team - there is about 20 feet from the ledge to Steve's high-point, so the fore-shortening is making it look more laced than it actually was: maybe he was just trying to become lighter anyway! ;-)
