Nicky was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and had a mastectomy in 2012. Incredibly, she broke the Lake District 24hour Fell record in 2011, climbing 64 summits, and she held the ladies record for all three classic UK mountain rounds until Jasmin Paris smashed them in 2016. This April (2017) she broke the Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge record as part of her 50th birthday celebrations.
