Duty Managers required at Gallery Bouldering, Oxford Jobs

© Jamie Wakeham

Gallery Bouldering is looking for enthusiastic and experienced Duty Managers for a new climbing centre in the heart of Oxford, opening in early 2024.

We are bringing the spacious laid-back style of European bouldering walls to Oxford, with facilities for everyone: from top level climbers to those who would like a casual and fun way to keep in shape in a relaxed community. Routes are set by the best in the business, alongside state-of-the-art kit like an adjustable Moon board, a 15° digital training board, and a Mock Rock wall. Gallery Bouldering is a welcoming and friendly space, with coffee provided by a leading local roastery, comfy sofas, remote working space, and a well appointed gym area.

We’ve got what it takes to put climbing at the heart of a thriving community – have you?

We are recruiting two duty managers to join our senior staff team, working in conjunction with the centre manager and deputy manager.

You will be responsible for:

  • the day to day running of the centre, often opening up or closing at night
  • supervision of junior team members
  • ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public in the centre while on duty
  • instructing members of the public in the use of the facilities
  • helping to keep the centre clean, tidy and safe
  • either managing our social media and competitions, or monitoring route setting and logging routes in Griptonite (we will allocate one of these roles to each successful candidate)

The job is for 37 hours a week and will be on a changing rota; joint applications from two people proposing a job-share will be considered.

Essential criteria - you will need to demonstrate:

  • experience of working in or using a climbing centre
  • experience (in any setting) of managing a team and supporting the development of team members
  •  commitment toward gaining MTA awards if you don't already hold them
  • a practical and positive approach to problem-solving
  • a track record of reliability and flexibility

It will help your application if:

  • your experience has been in a similar fitness-industry setting
  • you have experience of working with customer/membership databases (training will be provided)
  • you have experience in social media management, climbing competitively or managing comps, or professional routesetting
  • You hold CWI or higher, or BMC Fundamentals 1 or equivalent

What we can offer you:

  • a salary of £29,822
  • a market-leading benefits package including enhanced maternity/paternity and sick pay
  • free use of Gallery Bouldering for you and your immediate family, and discount in our café
  • a commitment to support the next step of your climbing industry career by funding your MTA and BMC qualifications

Please send a covering letter and CV, demonstrating how you meet the criteria, to Jamie Wakeham at admin@gallerybouldering.co.uk

Applications must arrive by midday on 5th January 2024.

Closing Date: 5th January, 2024
Salary: £29,822

For the sake of transparency, the requirement for CWI and a coaching qualification has been moved to desirable; we've realised this could be holding back good candidates who don't yet have these tickets from applying.
