Receptionists and instructors required at Gallery Bouldering, Oxford Jobs

© Jamie Wakeham

Gallery Bouldering is looking for welcoming and enthusiastic staff for a new climbing centre in the heart of Oxford, opening in early 2024.

We are bringing the spacious laid-back style of European bouldering walls to Oxford, with facilities for everyone from top level climbers to those who would like a casual and fun way to keep in shape in a relaxed community. Routes are set by the best in the business, alongside state-of-the-art kit like an adjustable Moon board, a 15° digital training board, and a Mock Rock wall. Gallery Bouldering is a welcoming and friendly space, with coffee provided by a leading local coffee roastery, comfy sofas, remote working space, and a well appointed gym area.

We’ve got what it takes to put climbing at the heart of a thriving community – have you?

We need you to be part of a team which will:

  • run the reception desk, including registering new members and taking payments, answering the phone and dealing with enquiries
  • patrol the centre to answer queries and identify any problems
  • induct first-time users of our centre in safe and proper use of the facilities
  • help keep the centre clean, tidy and safe

If you hold a climbing qualification (and we will support you in gaining these) we may also ask you to provide instruction and/or coaching.

Essential criteria - you will need to demonstrate:

  • experience of dealing with customers in a busy and sometimes unpredictable setting
  • a welcoming and efficient manner
  • a practical and positive approach to problem-solving
  • good numeracy, literacy, and IT skills
  • a reasonable degree of flexibility in your availability for work

It will help your application if:

  • your experience has been in a similar fitness-industry setting
  • you have an interest in climbing
  • you hold MTA or BMC instruction or coaching qualifications
  • you have experience of working with customer/membership databases

What we can offer you:

  • an hourly rate of £12.50 (which increases automatically to £13.50 once you hold CWI or higher, plus BMC Fundamentals 1 or equivalent)
  • a market-leading benefits package including enhanced maternity/paternity and sick pay
  • free use of Gallery Bouldering for you and your immediate family, and discount in our café
  • a commitment to support the next step of your climbing industry career by funding your MTA and BMC qualifications

We choose not to use zero-hours contracts; instead, to allow for maximum flexibility and fairness, our contracts will be for a minimum number of hours per week (to be agreed with the successful applicants) with options for a substantial amount of extra hours to be agreed on a weekly basis.

Please send a covering letter and CV, demonstrating how you meet the criteria, to Jamie Wakeham at admin@gallerybouldering.co.uk

Applications must arrive by midday on 5th January 2024.   Please include an indication of how many hours a week you would ideally like.
