The LLAMFF - UKC - LIVING ART Photo competition

The LLAMFF - UKC - LIVING ART Photo Competition, run in February on UKC, was a great success. There were over 240 superb photos entered from UKC Users with the winners being displayed during the LLAMFF on the weekend of 6 and 7 March. As a bonus, Living Art agreed to manage moving the images to ShAFF, on the next weekend giving extra exposure for these great photographs.

Below are the winning photos. The selection was made initially on UKC User votes with the final winners chosen by Ray Wood and Sue Peyton. Thanks to all who took part. We can't show all the entries since they have now been merged back into the respective UKC Galleries.

A Cold Self-Portrait
Taken on the penultimate belay on Pygmy Ridge (IV 5) in November 2008, this self-portrait is part of a project to capture the essence of winter climbing through portraiture. I'd had the idea of this shot for a while but never found the right combination of conditions to make it work – diffuse light, cold enough and with sufficient air moisture for frosting, and time to take the photo. Taken in a near whiteout with my old compact in manual mode, it took a bit of work to control the exposure but it was worth it with the photo's sharpness and limited colour palette. I'm glad it took Pete, who I was climbing with, a while to pull in the ropes!

The route is a direct finish to Quake Flake also claimed by Scott. Initial bold and hard moves lead to gear at 9m followed by an awkward top out.

2nd Prize To The Limit Category - Pete Wood

Lynsey Evans runs 'Mr Clean' at the Thousand Islands section of the Mekong river, Lao PDR. 
Engineers for the Si Phan Don dam project were at the islands in 2009, which will change the rapids and also the fortunes of the fishermen who feed much of the region.

Fearless Kea
A mountain parrot found only in New Zealand. Keas are known for their intelligence and curiosity and have been described as 'cheeky'. I was able to take this photograph with a small compact camera which has no zoom facility. Moments before I had just managed to stop the bird snatching my sweater. The picture was taken on the South Island on one of the summits around Arthur's Pass. The pass is the crossing point between Christchurch and the West Coast through the Southern Alps. The surrounding area is a National Park and one of the best places in the country to see Keas.
