With apologies if this has been posted before.

Cumberland Council is proposing to permanently close the wee road to the west of Thirlmere to all traffic including cyclists and walkers. The alternative for cyclists is the busy and rather scary A591. Details and suggested email to send to the council here:

Objections must be received before 15th September.

Done.

I've no doubt the council deems it less expensive to close the road than to make it safer. But even if they left it to become a gravel track, it'd be better than battling against increasingly heavy traffic for cyclists, walkers and riders alike.

In reply to MisterPiggy:

As I understand, United Utilities are responsible for the upkeep of the road, which, given their record on polluting Windermere, doesn't fill me with confidence.

Cumberland Council are on record as saying that they are committed to re-opening the road. Hopefully plenty of responses will keep their minds focussed!

Seems worthy of the second thread, since the original linked to a petition.  This is a development in that the council has opened a consultation period on their intent to close it.

The window for objections is only open for a short time, closes next week.

OPs link is especially good in that it has a drafted email ready to copy and paste and sign.

I signed the original petition from the old thread, I'll now send that email.

Also found the reference to the MCW act 1879 interesting.  Interesting enough to download a copy and look up the referenced section it really does clearly say that the road was to be public and forever maintained by "Manchester Corp" i.e. UU in todays money, if they also recieved all commitments such as these as part of privatisation
