Very loud and repetitive grunts !

Only during daylight hours - heard them yesterday

My assumption is wild boar if anyone can confirm. I have been climbing there since the '70s, but never heard this before.

The beast with two backs?

Rutting deer? It‘s that time of the year!

Or just a monster hedgehog?

Some boulderers have got a bit lost?

Oh no, I'm having a flash back to encounters had while walking down through the woods in Bristol to get to the bottom of the Avon Gorge climbs from the downs :-O

I've heard that in previous years too, and at this time of year- which makes me think it's rutting stags. I think there are fallow deer in the woods opposite, but don't think there are boar there.

Quite common to see them on the river bank that side

I've seen boar several times in the woods west of the A466 between St Arvans and Tintern, but never on the Piercefield side of the road. There are penty of deer in both areas, all the way down to the river, so they're very likely to be what we hear from Wintour's.

Thanks everyone, yes seen the deer previously on the opposite bank, so it must be them rutting.

I have no idea what noise a wild boar looking for lurve makes, and don't really want to be around at the time...
