Are there better maps for Germany than the DAV Alpenverien ones?
I don't like how they are more like illustrations, and altitude lines disappear on steep rocky terrain and somewhat difficult to read the steepness as well as an UK OS Map.
Online (you can save the maps) for Bavaria ( probably other lander as well) you go to bayern.portal/bayern atlas. From the choice of maps (the round symbols bottom left) find the one with contours. These aren't shown on steep ground for obvious reasons BUT if you touch on a point you get the coordinates and the altitude.
No idea about paper maps, to navigate I use Locus maps where the contours are shown anyway though a quick look at the Zugspitze tells me it's kinda mentally confusing in real detail!
They are local to whichever organisation marked them. Have you looked at the Bayerisch Vermessungsampt 1:25000 walking map series, they might have more info on them?
> Also does anyone have a guide to the red and white trail markings (in Germany)
> They look like Austrian flags, but some are circles/round.
This might be useful? https://www.thetravelersbuddy.com/2020/09/30/hiking-signs-alps/ To be honest with you, it doesn't really matter, as long as there's paint blobs you're fine. You'll often find red or black dots too. Are you living in the area or planning to visit? Oh, DAV maps are better than Kompass ones as well. I don't care about contours that much, as if there's not a path it's almost certainly steep choss you don't want to be on anyway - the Alps aren't like UK hills insomuch that people generally only follow paths. Komoot is pretty useful by the way, I started using it in the Bavarian Alps last year.
If you're anywhere near Switzerland it might be covered by https://map.geo.admin.ch/ which is excellent: loads of overlay choice, freely printable at any scale
