The super-steep main crag at S'estret on Mallorca has suffered a major rockfall. Much of the left-hand side of the crag has collapsed and the rest remains very unstable and is not currently climbable. For those who have been to the place this may not come as too much of a surprise; it is not that the place was loose, it was just so steep with little bulk behind the face. The power of gravity was probably always going to win this one in the end. One bonus is that the chunks of rock it has left are so big that there could well be some good new bouldering there soon.

In reply to UKC News:

Was there spring and summer 2003 and then same again 2004.

It's a hard crag, wildly overhanging ...or was !
I could only do one route “Bunocracia” @ 6b+ and this was after a local showed me the required “trick” moves.
See RockFax 13 page 233.

I actually remember thinking to myself, wouldn’t like to be around here if that lot should ever drop. The left hand side of the crag did look precariously unstable.

But the upshot is that the rock fall should add to the already excellent bouldering on the wooded slopes below this crag.

However, the landowner and local council may now deem access as to dangerous.

If you’re on the island it’s a nice place to visit and it stays relatively cool due to the trees even in the height of summer.
And Valldemossa is only 1K further up the road, nice refreshing beers and snacks
