Was thinking of getting the ferry across to Bergen next summer and driving up, but the ferry crossings seem to cost about £500.

I know you can get cheap flights to norway, but car hire is pretty expensive too.
From past experience the public transport in Norway is pretty good and not too badly priced, but is it possible/sensible to try to get to Lofoten via public transport?

In reply to Glen:
Hitched back from the Lofoten Islands a couple of years ago no problems. It took 2 or 3 days but got a couple of great lifts and met some interesting Polish hitch hikers. On the way up I took the ferry that goes up the coast and trains. Camping a little way from villages / houses makes it much cheaper.
