From reading various sources it sounds like getting there by car is the easiest way to go. Anyone gone to Lofoten without hiring a car? Is it easy to do on public transport?

Realistically what sort of costs would I be looking at to get there and back?

In reply to Matt_b: Are you meaning going in summer or winter?

In summer, getting there is relatively easy on public transport. Moving between areas a lot harder - expect to hitch. Couldn't say about in winter.

In reply to TobyA: Sorry, should have specified, summer.

I really love the look of the Norway, and fancy spending a few weeks there climbing this summer as an alternative to the alps. Ideally just spending a few weeks in one spot.

Romsdalen also looks like a cool place, and also perhaps a little easier to get to. Are there similar quality routes here to lofoten?

Your sources are wrong. Flying there is by far the easiest way.

Didn't hire a car first time we went, and it was OK.

Romsdal is a brilliant venue, with good sized (5000') peaks, small glaciers and a variety of cragging from bouldering to 20+ pitches. Sadly the rock is not the superb granite of Lofoten and the weather is less settled due to the big hills/southerly location. Despite that its a prime spot.
