I have two headtorches - an old style Petzl Zoom and a 3-led Princeton thing. The former is big and heavy, the latter basically not very bright and not much cop for illuminating anything beyond about 3 feet away. What could I get that's fairly light and comapct, and that I could still reasonably use for, say, completing a route and getting down in the dark?

Petzl Tikka XP is pretty good IMO, and the batteries last forever...

In reply to Jimmy D: silva L1, voltage control, 3 watts, long focused beam, runs on 4 aa batteries but also comes as standard with an external c cell pack.

Have now ordered one of these. Hope it's good! Although looking at the way conditions are panning out the only use it's likely to see this weekend is going to be reading under the bedclothes at the hut!

I use this. Compared to a petzl zoom after each has been used for about an hour, the tikka xp is much brighter.

Hey, it's (literally ha ha) brilliant! Seriously powerful for such a little thing. Might have to engineer a benightment just to show it off. Chris?
