For what it's worth, with reference to this thread r.e. climbing near Lancaster: http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=210991&v=1#3095012
I took some pictures of the quarried parts of Williamson Park, Lancaster whilst I was up there the other day.

Yes, it is very green and very wet (although the photos were taken after a few days of rain so it's usually slightly less damp...)

Strangely enough I've never even considered it for climbing even though I've lived in the area for ages and been to the park many times. When they do the open air theatre in the summer someone in the cast always finds an excuse to abseil down one of the faces you mention. I don't know if they do it in the Shakespear productions, (although with my very limited knowledge of Shakespear I can't seem to recall that many abseiling opportunities.)
I must look around with more of a "climbers eye" next time I'm down there.

I've tried boludering on the area behind the bench

OK - but very limited

In reply to Tom Phillips: Yep, that's the only bit I've actually tried bouldering on too. I rather suspect the council put the bench there on purpose to stop that sort of nonsense

I'm sure someone could get abseiling into A Midsummer Night's Dream. I've seen some pretty random stagings of that.

I was just amazed that I keep wandering around the place and finding more bits of rock! Though much of it obviously doesn't yell "climb me".

In reply to net: I dont think this is Lancaster Quarry, it was a pit below the loony bin, even then just used as a dump.

In reply to net: I seem to remember prussiking up quite a lot of the trees before going to the Alps. Also, Tom and I found some great boulder problems on some of the house in Bowerham (under cover of darkness only!)

Might have been built on by now? Loony Bin (assuming you're talking about the one just out of town from Williamson Park) is now posh housing

Still, may have a hunt next time I'm down - but personally, I'd head up towards Clougha....

In reply to Al Evans: There are quite a few quarried sites in the area - the ones within Williamson Park, Scotch Quarry (only a very small area of exposed rock remains), and another area at the top of Freehold. I'm not sure where the one under the Moor Hospital is (if that's where you're talking about - I think there were 3 or 4 of those sort of institutions in Lancaster at one time were there not?).

In reply to Carolyn: I have started going round taking pictures of craglets on Clougha now - I agree, they are much nicer. In fact, I've even climbed some of them

Are you sure this wasn't just an excuse for Tom to go peering through random people's windows? A scary thought...

try the small quarry near the water viaduct. a few good boulder problems, and has cleary been used for dry tooling practice, the routes are even marked with red arrows!

In reply to Tom Phillips: Aye, I found that the other week! It was bigger than I thought it was having only had a cursory glance at it before. I didn't look in any great depth but I imagine traversing might be the best bet? There only looked to be one line, red-arrowed as you mentioned, that didn't look horribly chossy at the top!

In reply to Tom Phillips: Aye I used to dry tool there. Thats about all it's good for. We used to (and I think some people may still climb there) set up top ropes on stakes at the top and dry tool the lines. It's green and loose, you'd be desperate to rock climb there.

I've pretty much covered the whole of the clougha area from when I used to fell run up there, there is not really much of note around. One place that is worth going if you've not been is quernomre crag. There are some good problems dotted about in amongst the jumble.

A bit further along the road, (just by the lay by), if you walk down towards clougha, there are a few more boulders.

I good thin traverse across the main wall - about V2
may be worth toproping I guess, a clean may ne beneficial as it isn't a dirty crag, but is perhaps a bit on the loose side near the top.

PS - whats happened to http://www.kendalmc.org/

.... but only after a successful whiskey and poker night the evening before. Its a grotty place unless distracted by a hangover.
