Just out of curiosity - why does the new generation of Grivel ice axes have this red rubber accordion at the upper end of the shaft?

Can it be easily removed or is it glued on?

Does the shaft paint continue underneath the thing?

What's hidden under it?

Odd design feature, really.

It is to hold onto whilst daggering. Seems to work quite well.
