This was the direction in the 1992 A&C guide; I think it's still valid, though the map may have the car park shown in the right place now:
OS Ref 828 083. Park at the National Trust car-park at OS Ref 832 086 (not the one further west shown on the OS map). Walk out to the topograph across wild-flower meadowland; the crag-top fence can be seen from here below on the left (south).
