Hi all,

Going to Les Ecrins over New Years and was wondering if anyone could recommend good sectors for ice climbing close to the road/parking. Anything within a 30 min approach would be perfect! Any ideas?

In reply to Aurelie:

if you go up top Freissinieres there are some sectors very close to the car park....also Ceillac has good routes 5 mins from the car....good info on conditions here when the season gets going:

In reply to Aurelie:

Ceillac for definate and both Freissinieres and Fournel if the road has been cleared up to the winter carparks (normally done within a couple of days of snowfall). You can keep an eye on conditions on the following site:

There's been early snowfall and it was -10 in the Queyras a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully conditions will be as good as last year.

Thanks for the advice both of you. And indeed nice to know we may have prime conditions, fingers crossed.

In reply to Aurelie: And if you go further south into the Ubayette valley, there is a route where you get out of the car and abseil directly off the Armco and climb straight up again. Approach time 1 second. Serious stuff.
