Hey guys, I am 15 and just a little worried aboutmy harness. It might sound stupid but it is new and I want it to last as long as it can. right I got harness and my dad smokes. after he put siggiret he had a look at it , is that ok? LOL told you, It is stupid but would like a answer!

Thank you.

In reply to Climbwhenready: Run that by me again, I'm not following the bit after "My Dad Smokes".

For what it's worth; I know plenty of climbers who smoke, some going as far as having fag breaks during multi-pitch climbs and their gear doesn't seem to have come to any harm from it.

Your harness will be fine.
Did you say that he put the cigarette out and then looked at it? I can't imagine any damage will be done unless he put the cigarette out using your harness.
It's not a silly question though.

In reply to James Oswald: yeah he put it out lol! Also what about cleaning things like polish, e.g when cleaning room and harness is on bed. Will that harm it?

alex, you know sweating, falling, clipping junk to and wearing in the sun, snow and rain isnt good for harnesses either....

they dont last forever. store it away from chemicals and smoking fathers (under your bed with the stash of porn), expect 4 or 5 years but aim to trash it earlier from using it.

also, youre 15 or whatever right? in a year or two you will have more money, black diamond etc will bring out cooler looking harnesses, your ideas will change and soon you will have half a dozen harnesses.

be sensible and have fun using it.

Should I worry about my harness as it is about to become a teenager in its own right very soon?

As to the OP, I've read somewhere that sperm can leave stains on a harness which can rot the material.

Remember to wipe up with a tissue when done.

you need to create a protective packaging for it.

first, wrap it in cling flim, to keep the dust out. (make sure it's good quality cling film). then bubble wrap, or a padded envelope will do, finally a good layer of silver foil to keep it dark.

when you take it to the climbing wall watch out for chalk dust. ;-

I'm quite intrigued by the idea of a smoke effect harness - I bet Arcteryx are working on one at this very moment.

In reply to KellyKettle: yeah, you guessed right. It's just I don't want to start putting swearwords in the ukc fourm because the moderators will ban me and I don't really want to get into that situation.
Climbwhenready 03 Jan 2011
In reply to nufkin:Maybe, but smoke will not effect it. I have come to realise there are much more potentially dangerous emissions out there, such as co2.The only way you can protect that gear is to never use it and rap it up into tin foil. Then there is UV light that can (overtime) effect the performance of the equipment. So there is no point looking down about it and get out there and use the stuff!

All manufacturers put a date on their harness that it should be replaced, I know black diamond harnesses are only 3 year lifetimes, and that is from manufacture, not purchase. Obviously it doesnt take into account usage, so if you use it all the time and take lots of falls, its lifespan will be dramatically reduced. Keep looking at it and look for wear and tear, and use your own judgement. But if it is over 10 years, it is probably worth replacing now.
