Can anyone recommend a base layer thats not dark blue or Black?

A white one!

Seriously I've seen loads in non-dark colours but couldn't recommend a specific one. I have a lovely white Fila vest that honestly doesn't make me look like a model in a homoerotic pop video

In reply to Jim Walton: Helly Hansen transporter, comes in a few colours, including a ridiculously bright yellow (the one I have).

Helly Hansen used to do white baselayers and I think decathlon sell other colours in their Wedze brand.

In reply to Jim Walton: Helly hansen do lifa tops in white, long or short sleeve. Ideal for alps.

In reply to stevev: How the heck did I forget about Helly hansen. I hang my head in shame.

Have you tried Smartwool? they seem to do a few different colours depending on whether you want short/long sleeves.

Off the top of my head...

Helly Hansen
Arc'teryx
Icebreaker
Howies
Devold
Embers Merino
Patagonia
Smartwool
Trekmates
Millet
Tog 24
Quechua

All do various synthetic or wool base layers in lots of different styles and colours!

I'll add berghaus to the above list. They do some nice colours and tend to be a little more reasonably priced than a lot of other brands.

If you're looking for something bright that stands out against the rock so it looks good in photos, I found that specialist running shops seem to have brighter-coloured base layers.

Try Hagloffs, cracking gear and can be very colourful if not a trifle expensive, Excellent base layers especially the 'active' range.
