The wife & I are heading to Peru & Chile in November, and unfortunately are have to miss out on the likes of Huaraz and such due to them lying above the 2500m mark.
Does anyone know of any reasonably accessible & worthwhile crags that aren't at high altitude?

We'll be heading to New Zealand in December: so gearwise we'll have double ropes, full rack & helmets.
Climbing early grade 6s this trip, a bit out of shape.
I speak moderate spanish and we have family there (who will be clueless about crags)
Cheers for any advice you can give.

i think there is meant to be good climbing in the cerro catedral range near bariloche; is across the border in argentina, but chile is so thin that you are never far from argentina at any point...

not sure about peru. a lot of the andes are rather crumbly volcanic stuff or shale, not great for cragging, but there must be some stuff

not sure i've been much help...

but sounds like a great trip, enjoy,

cheers

In reply to Removed Usermartym: There'ssome good climbing in Chile, and some even better ones just over the border in Argentina. I have a basic guidebook, its a word file, I put it together when I worked out there last year.

For Frey, and I really recommend travelling there it is near San Carlos du Bariloche. Pataclimb has some excellent topos for there.

Lots of good climbing round there, and in Chile there is alsoi cichamo, not been there but meant to be a developing Yosemite.

Further south around Coyaique there is some climbing as well.

Hope that helps

In reply to Mark Reeves: If you search around in the nov/dec 2010 archives of my blog, I took a load of photos when I was out there.

Why can't you go above 2500m

Not so much in Peru outside of Huaraz area. As said Argentina is great, Mark mentioned Frey, also in the Bariloche area is Valle Encantado which is a good sport climbing place.

Websites to check

How long have you got and what's your itinerary?

Health reasons.

Thanks for all the good points so far.

Less than we wanted. Probably 2-3 weeks for climbing/hiking. The other half would be spent with family in Peru (Lima & Tacna)
