Were they static or moving with the wind?

You mean like the film Independence Day?

In reply to adam11:

They appeared static.

Wind speed generally was low, and I think the wind was basically westerly.

The overall cloudbase was probably about 4000', but these were definitely lower.

I quite like mammary clouds, not for their schoolboy sniggering but because they look so cool when the whole sky is covered in a blanket of them.

I always thought that with a really good display of Lenticular form clouds, that they were the dominant middle cloud group. Your photos show a nice layer of alto-stratus above, which leads me to guess at them being created by local geographic factors. (ie fast moving moist air from the right direction and a bit of suitable relief). Their transistory nature maybe due to the fact that lower level winds are more variable in nature than the air streams higher up.

Anyway, always good to see a cloud-centric photo.

No offence but the look rather under whelming and quite different to all the other pictures of Lenticular clouds I've seen.

Yeah, they come in various shapes and don't all look like flying saucers.
Took this a few months ago.

No offence taken. The shots were posted so that someone could hopefully confirm what I was looking at, rather than for their (lack of) artistic or technical merit.

It's because they are 'different to all the other pictures' that I'm curious.

In reply to roddyp:

They're lenticularis. Caused by a standing wave over hills.
 Siward 20 Jun 2013
In reply to roddyp: yep, they're clouds alright.
 DaveHK 20 Jun 2013
In reply to Siward:

We frequently see them over Ben Wyvis.

I'm starting a Facebook campaign to have them named after me.
