Need a super lightweight tent for 2 to take from the UK to hike in Yosemite, bearing in mind the flight weight restrictions.
Must be super cheap but reliable. Does it exist?
Or, is it better to buy a cheapie at Walmart and give it away before coming home?

In reply to Co1in H: Light, cheap and strong - pick the 2 most important qualities.

Super cheap AND super lightweight? I don't think they go together really. Also, what is lightweight for you?

This is a bit pricey but under 1kg for example, but most 'lightweight' tents that I have seen are around twice the weight.

In reply to Co1in H: this is pretty light for a 2 man, and cheap, but how sturdy I couldn't be sure http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9019827.htm

In reply to purplemonkeyelephant: That is a serious tent, but way off my budget. I agree the 3 terms don't go together and it will be a compromise.
It is unlikely the tent will get used after this trip.

In reply to girlymonkey: I think it has to be light and cheap. We are talking about Yosemite camping in late October.

In reply to Co1in H: even cheaper and lighter. As I say, pick 2 of the 3. The expensive one above looks great for light and solid, these are light and cheap. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9275647.htm

In reply to girlymonkey: Hey, it fits the criteria and with a plastic sheet over the top it could do the job. I'll look at that.
Thanks

As others have said: quality, lightweight and cheap aren't common bedfellows.

The super lightweight tents tend to be those designed for mountain marathons and are "cosy" for two. They aren't cheap: £300 gets you this http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/tents-and-spares/all-tents/laser-competition-1-... for 930 grammes.

More a trekking tent:
https://www.vango.co.uk/trekking/spirit-200+.html but £150 and weighs 2.9Kg

In reply to Co1in H: Go to REI in San Francisco (easy to get to by car or bus) and get one there. Cheaper and you can sell it on at the end if needed.

In reply to ben b: Probably a good idea, alternatively Coleman Cobra 2s seem quite well liked and are said to be great value for money 50-70 quid-ish I think.

Either that or Decathlon or Go Outdoors do cheap pretty light backpacking tents.

In reply to Co1in H:

The Rei store in San Fransisco rents camping gear. My sister rented tent, stove and other things there on a trip to Yosemite a few years ago. No idea what sort of tent she ended up with, but she emailed them before she left the UK and they were very helpful.
Or post on Supertopo - see if anyone will lend/ rent / sell you one for the duration?
