Hello all,

Calling on the collective knowledge of visitors to the above area,

I am flying into Bilbao this Sunday and will need to buy some gas (coleman type) and meths for use in a trangia.

How easy is it to buy the above in the Picos ?

any answers would be gratefully received, many thanks Sam

we had no problem buying gas in Potes. No idea about meths.

We had no problems buying gas either, there were a few hardware shops dotted about where you can buy camping equipment, even in the smallest of towns (which I cant for the life of me remember their names of now). I'm pretty sure there would be meths there though. Enjoy, loved the Picos!!!

In reply to sam benson: Meths is called Alcohol Metilico or
Alcohol de quemar in Spanish.

It is sold in supermarkets and ironmongers shops, as well as many small village shops.

There is a hardware store in Potes - should be good there for methys. Just do the translation now and write it down ready for being in the shop!

The shop Oxigeno in Oviedo can supply all your needs.


In cangas de onis gas and alcohol are available.
White gas isn't, despite the camping shop selling the stoves!

The supermarkets were very limited in combustible liquid.

The hardware store sold alcohol but little else.

I ended up using turpentine (aguarras) to fuel my MSR dragonfly.
