Morning,

Where do Glasgow-based climbers buy winter boots these days? The usual suspects (Tiso & Cotswolds) hardly stock any now, and I'd like to try a few on before deciding. Any Edinburgh shops worth visiting or do I need to go further afield and/or buy online?

Thanks,
Neil

In reply to Neil Adams: I take it you've been to the Tiso Outdoor Experience shop on Couper Street as opposed to the Buchanan Street branch.

Have you tried the Tiso at Ratho? It's a bit more of a specialist climbing shop than the "everything outdoors" approach that the other branches tend to have.

I would never buy boots online*. Especially with winter boots, you really need to have them properly fitted to avoid pain, grief, disappointment and wasted money.

* Sole exception: a second pair of something that I know from experience is right for me - and I've only done that once. I wouldn't buy anything from 5.10 online because their sizing is so inconsistent!

In reply to Neil Adams: The Tiso shop near Buchannan bus station in Glasgow recently got new stock in. They have the scarpa rebel ultras, scarpa rebel pros and some new salewa boots.

Possibly more.

In reply to Martin W: I haven't tried the Ratho one - will give them a shot. Thanks.

In reply to Neil Adams: Go outdoors often has quite a few. Don't ask for advice there, but if you know what you are looking at they are pretty good. Clydebank maybe better than Coatbridge. I won't go to Tiso.

In reply to girlymonkey: OK - I wouldn't have thought to try there. Thanks

In reply to Neil Adams: To answer my own question, I went to the Perth Tiso today (at the roundabout on the A9). They'd a much better selection in plenty of sizes, and very helpful & knowledgeable staff.
