Would you take your axes to Cotopaxi??

OK, I know that there's nothing technical about Cotopaxi, but would you take your (tech) ice tools just in case?

Not if you're going up the standard route. It's a big mountain, there are undoubtedly things to climb if you go looking.

In reply to moco: No, you can hire a basic axe from the town at the base (the name escapes me). You'd probably only use it to keep you hand out of your pocket though...

Depends what else you plan to do. When we were there we climbed Iliniza Sur by the standard route, which goes at AD ish, and I was glad to have two axes, specifically for the short mixed gully low down as you access the face... thought this, along with Illiniza Norte, was well worth doing (poss as acclimatization for Cotopaxi).
