I have about 5 hours to spare on a work trip to Slovenia and am looking for a hill/mountain in the vicinity of Triglav that I can walk or scramble up within that time, ideally getting a view of Triglav to boot. Any suggestions?

I think most of the hills close to Triglav would probably take a bit longer, apart from maybe Bovski Gamsovec, which isn't that interesting.

On a clear day you can see Triglav quite well from Prisank, which is a relatively quick ascent from the top of the Vršič pass.

That pic is Razor and Triglav from Prisank BTW.

I'm looking through my guidebook now and don't see much closer to Triglav with a guidebook time less than 8 hours. I think you need to see if you can get more than 5 hours free.

There is a walking route and a via ferrata on Mala Mojstrovka, accessible from the top of the Vrisic pass. Both do-able in about 4 hours if you are efficient. Described here, alongside a slightly longger route on Prisojnik:

I recommend the Cicerone guide, which descrbes this route and many others, including a few that would fit your bill.

thank you both that's useful beta, looks like the Vrsic pass is the point to get high quickly, as it were...just hoping the weather will be OK.

When are you doing this? If its right now these routes are going to be in full winter condition and will be a totally different proposition!
In reply to Snoweider: Friday. Don't think I can justify axe and 'poons but will make a careful assessment of the conditions. I'm keeping an open mind and not too fixed on any objectives - I'm rally just quite excited to be going somewhere I've never been before...

In reply to whispering nic: I take it you are an experienced winter Alpinist?

You'll need axe and crampons up there at this time of year and more than 5 hours car to car I'd have thought. You'd also need to be pretty familiar with the terrain/avalanche risk. These are current weather conds for Triglav summit: http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Triglav/forecasts/2864

Its a fabulous place but if you only have half a day, then a lower level walk in the woodland to enjoy the vistas would be a good option. The ski resorts aren't open yet but I think they've had a fair bit of snow already.
In reply to Snoweider: Thanks again for your advice, I do have some experience of wintery mountain conditions, and a well developed sense of self preservation/cowardice and will proceed with suitable caution.

Mulling it over a bit more, theres a nice walk in to the North Face from the Vrata valley that will give you awesome views of the best side of Triglav without having to climbing any mountains.

Another optiopn would be to climb Pec, on the Slovenian/Austrain /talian border. Its not very high, (1510m) and most of the route is in woodland, but its got great views of the north faces.

In reply to whispering nic: Right now there is about 5o cm of snow on Kredarica, that is at 2500 m and on Friday heavy snow fall is also predicted. So maybe not the best time to visit high mountains right now.
In reply to matejn: Thanks again, I have been about a bit and would never underestimate any alpine area, so i will proceed with suitable caution.

One suggestion is to take the Vogel Cable car just outside the village of Ribcev Las and then walk up to the top of Vogel from the cable car and then walk all the back down to Ribcev Las or Take the cable car back down

View of Triglav half way up Vogel this summer
