Just wondering about hybrid softshell/waterproof jackets (e.g Rab Fusion/MHW Mixaction) and to a lesser extent down/synthetic hybrids. Do people use these? Is there a time and a place for them or are they a "middle ground" too far?

In reply to EvanDavies: I use a fusion sometimes in winter when the day is likely to be short and the weather ok. Usually have a marmot dry climb underneath to help with wind proofing. Combo works well, stops the snow / ice getting you wet without loads of condensation and overheating. Wouldn't relay on it in poor conditions unless I knew it was going to be cold (no rain) then my belay jacket could keep out the elements.

I like em. Puts what you want where you want it.
Being able to vent or insulate or waterproof or have stretch in some areas but not others reduces the suit-of-armour feel i dont like and can make for less bulk overall.
