hiya,
heading to south germany end of jan and was hoping to get some hiking/cross-country skiing/orienteering in whilst there. if anyone has any suggestions that would be great, and if you know of any good huts to stay in in the german alps that'd also be much appreciated. cheers

Huts are mostly closed in the winter, unfortunately.

Loads of good x-c skiing just over the Austrian border from Mittenwald though, in the Scharnitz-Leutasch-Seefeld area. (The lovely Magdalena Neuner grew up just round the corner)

Via ferrata, end Jan. Hmmmm.
There´s one indoors at Sport Schuster in Munich which would be o.k.

Two friends of mine did the Tajakante a couple of weeks ago, starting from the winter room in the Coburger Hut. They are both 7b-ish sport climbers with substantial alpine experience. They said it was very, very hard.

What we´re trying to say is it might be -20 and everything covered in ice, there again it might not!
Walking can be o.k or snow shoeing is more the thing given the normal snow cover.
Langlauf is done everywhere along the alps and probably the only thing I really know about, otherwise I just huddle at home in the winter!
Here´s the list of DAV huts that are open, there are others as well, some private and some belonging to other organisations. http://www.alpenverein.de/dav-services/alpine-auskunft/dav-huetten-saisonsc...

thanks for the reply. yep, aware that it will be cold but depending on temperatures I thought it could be a possibility and flying easyjet so unfortunately travelling very light. they will be 'open' though? cheers for the info on the huts. if you have any good Langlauf routes to do that'd be much appreciated, we're both fit and good navigators but obviously will need to pick up the skills. just like powerwalking by the looks of things

Navigate? It´s all signposted! Otherwise just follow the trail to the next pub!
There are trails everywhere, use the map here http://www.skigebiete-test.de/loipenplan/mittenwald-kranzberg.html or http://www.bergfex.de/bayern/langlaufen/langlaufen-kruen/loipenplan/ or get a map at the tourist office or when you hire your skis at somewhere like http://www.skischule-mittenwald.de/html/langlauf.html
