I'm going to be living in Alesund in Norway for 6 months from Feb. I know nothing about Norway, Alesund, or the climbing scene there. I lead up to VS on grit and have invested in winter kit though not actually used it in anger yet so looking to learn...

Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated! If anyone wants a willing second I'd be keen to get out with someone who knows the area. Otherwise, good clubs? good guide books?

Alesund is here: https://goo.gl/maps/mPj5p

Thanks,
Oo

PS. sadly it's a 9 hour drive to Rjukan

Get hold of this book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Climbs-Scrambles-Walks-Romsdal-Norway/dp/1904207243
the base for climbing is Andalsnes which is about 50 miles East of Alesund here

This book might also be worth getting
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scandinavian-Mountains-Peaks-Metres-Hurrungane/dp/0...
Its a bit further away but not too far and to the SE of Alesund

Sorry that first map link brings up Alesund again. I've tried reposting it but it does the same. If you zoom in and follow the E39 and E136 roads East you'll come to Andalsnes.

Sorry, the second map link does the same!
Put "Skjolden" in google maps and you'll see "Store Skagastolstind" just East of it which is where the climbing is. Zoom out and you'll see Alesund to the NW.

For general hills and probably a lot of inspiration/pics, check westcoastpeaks.com

You'll learn a lot about Aalesund there.

From what a vaguely gather, Orsta is the place to be for big hills. Romsdalen is a couple hours away.

In reply to kwoods: Great hill area. Caught a glimpse of Slogen on the a stop at Ålesund on the way up north. Got hold of some maps and worked out what the striking hill was and went and did it. It is a steep and straightforward walk, but there are many more technical hills in the area. Even in horrid weather I had a good fortnight's hill bashing in the area.

Ski mountaineering is reputed to be good.
