Starting out on 30th June 2014, Big Dave Redmond is going to walk from John O' Groats to Lands End to raise money for Help for Heroes, the MS Society and Macmillan Cancer Support.

He will be completely on his lonesome and as such won't have a team to support him or carry his gear. He will be carrying all his own kit the entire journey and will be sleeping in a tent every night.

The rules are simple: no cars, buses, boats, trains or planes... no donkeys or other livestock... no hitching a lift on a passing teenagers handlebars or nicking the skateboard or rollerblades off of the local kids.

Only pure leg power (together with a fair amount of blood, sweat and tears we're guessing) is going to drive him for the 1100 or so mile journey and what is more... he is aiming to achieve this in about 50 days (give or take).

All the money raised will be divided equally between his three chosen charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society and Help for Heroes.

It's going to be a tough challenge but it pales into insignificance compared to battles that the truly courageous people these charities support face every day.

Who is this mad man? Well, he isn't your average long distance trekker that's for sure! Dave is a 31 year old, 6ft, 24 stone, criminal barrister from Dunstable, near Luton. He is a full time husband and father, part time PhD student and a sometime warrior poet! By his own admission he has become a bit squidgy round the edges in recent years, but this local man is determined to do something that makes a difference this year and thus this crazy plan was hatched!

I know that many on this forum will be seasoned hill walkers and hikers - any advice is most welcome.

Anyone that's walked all the way from Lands End deserves one IMO.

It'll probably have to be an organic fair-trade wheat-grass smoothie rather than a pint in Hebden Bridge tho whilst flicking through the Guardian and flicking my, ahem (tofu) bean...

Don't talk about yourself in the third person!

> Good on him, but if I was brave/ fit enough to do it, I would want to do the most Southerly to most Northerly point ( Mainland) and not the ,done to death, signpost to signpost route. That said, I will be donating.

Has anyone done all the way South (Lizard ) to Far North Shetland at Flugga?

I used a few ferries ( and a car) and my feet but of course I did not get out to the lighthouse as you point out , I just walked to the most Northerly point I could
( there were a few brave sheep that got further North than me.

Big Dave Redmond will attempt to talk about himself only in the first person from now on mate.

In all seriousness though, thanks for the support guys.
