Stiff thin and strong, Kevlar Dynema or Spectra if you can afford it.
Depends how you rig it or abuse it. 4mm may be ok for short abs.
I have used 50 metres of 6mm to pull down 50 metres of wet, half frozen 9mm rope. We thought it might snap before the rope pulled, the amount of stretch was amazing, just as well we had a rope clamp and two people to pull.
