Snapping noise from new rope

I recently bought a new rope and unpacked and ran it through from end to end. It seems to have been lifted off the reel rather than unwound which made it difficult to get the twists out. The final 10cm at both ends was curled 180 degrees so I ran my hand along it to straighten it out. Something snapped (both ends) and now they are straight. Has anyone else had this on new ropes? The core and sheath seem to be fixed together still.
