Easy Multi Pitch France

I will be spending a week in Verdon and a week in Chamonix in June.

Can you recommend any multi pitch routes in the 5s?

Preferably not too committing as it will be the first time we have climbed multi pitch. Also, will a 60m single rope be adequate?

Thanks, Josh

Half ropes recommended.

There's absolutely loads of multi-pitch stuff in the easy grades but particularly around Chamonix. Lots of tuff in the valley and higher up, for example, on the Aiguille Rouge side of things for you to have a crack at (including the previously mentioned L'Index). I'd also recommend half ropes as you will probably end up abseiling. A pair of standard 50m halves will do you fine if you have or can borrow some. In the past, if also doing some sports climbing, I've used one of the new skinny singles (some are rated for both uses) together with a normal half.

Most of the multi-pitch stuff in the Verdon will require some degree of commitment.

In the Verdon there is Les Dalles Grises. A classic multi-pitch 5.

Slightly harder. You could do the Arête du Belvédère also in the Verdon. It is mainly 5 with one 6a+ pitch.

Everything in Verdon Gorge proper is committing to a degree as you are ab'ing into routes so need to climb back out. Also, I think you will struggle to pad out a week with grade 5 routes. Easiest routes are around 5+ in the Gorge but there are not a huge sellection. There's some outlying stuff that would suit but they are not the main event of the area. Maybe save Verdon for another trip and look at other venues?

Thanks,

Im going to have to persuade my brother into giving me his half ropes for the trip!

Ive been recommended 'Crag Climbs in Chamonix' as a guide book, have you had any experiance / know of a better one?

Also, have any of you used a guide book for Verdon you would recommend?

Rockfax do France: Cote d'Azur which has a section on the Verdon.

Also, you should be able to buy the Verdon guidebook locally (La Palud).
Apart from the climbing, the gorge walk is well-worth doing.

I just had a look and, though I think mine is an earlier edition, yes, this is good for the valleys (you'll no doubt visit Les Gaillands - everyone does! - and maybe the Vallorcine area) and easily accessible higher crags (such as the Aig Rouge stuff).

It's also in English, bonus!
