Despite originally being from South Wales I have never actually climbed there. I have a few non-climbing friends there and will be up this weekend with my gear.

Any thoughts on crags local(ish) to Cardiff that would be good for non-climbers? Ideally sport routes grade 2-3 (but I guess there aren't any round there) or trad routes Diff to Severe; they may be climbing in trainers.

I would set up top ropes if possible, but if there are easy sport routes where there is no top-out I can still ascend up them with my shiny new clipstick.

Gower is your baby. Three cliffs bay?

I second that - easy to set up top ropes although could be busy.

Hi Andrew,

If you want some easy bolted slabs for beginners check out Senghenydd on SWMC Wiki site. Small crag very close to Cardiff.

Box bay at rest bay, porthcawl. You get about 2-3 hours either side of low tide.

I would go for 3 cliffs bay or box bay or maybe caswell bay, whichever is most convenient. There are some nice easy routes at Caswell bay too, but the belays aren't so good iirc.

Thanks all, good suggestions I think. now just to see how available time and tides correspond!

I had also somehow decided the Gower was much further from Cardiff than it is...
