In principle there nowt wrong with sitting on a piece of wood. The question you need to ask yourself is "In what way is the new saddle uncomfortable (sore sit bones, sore inner thighs, sore/numb 'privates'...)" The solution is likely to be different for each. Also have looked to see how the new saddle shape differs from the old one? Narrower? Wider? Flatter (side-to-side)? Flatter (back-to-front)? That might provide some clues what to look for.
