Cheap flight to San Francisco

I'm trying to book a return flight to San Francisco, from Manchester ideally, and I wondered if there are any websites or travel agents people would recommend to get a good deal? The cheapest seem to be on travelshoppe.co.uk, but they seem to be so much cheaper than other sites I've looked at (£450 as opposed to around £600 for most others), I'm not sure what to think.

Also, recommendations for a cheap hotel just for one night would be appreciated. Don't need anything fancy, single room, quiet, I'll just be wanting some sleep.

Cheers,

Mathew.

Airbnb for somewhere to stay. Cheapest flights are variable, but £450 is pretty good, be surprised if you find cheaper anywhere.

Try flying to Oakland, it's just across a BART ride across the Bay to SF, and sometimes can be cheaper flights.

Thanks everyone. Would be nice to hear if anybody has used travelshoppe.co.uk, they're so much cheaper I'm a bit suspicious.

Never used them. Who is the flight actually with? I've always found it cheaper to go direct to the airline and book on their website than through an agent.

Delta.

Over £700 if you try to book on the Delta site.

Ouch. Did you try BA direct on their website? I've weirdly enough always found them quite cheap to SF. Or American Airlines.

Oh well, that's my suggestions exhausted then! Maybe go with that cheap one? Although where you flying via, and who via? It's not via China with some local carrier is it?

Never used them but be careful. The cheap sites often use a mix of flights with different carriers, you may get halfway and find that the next carrier wants to charge you a fortune because your bags are overweight or oversize.

It may just be easier to pay a little more and book direct with one of the major airlines.

600 isn't expensive for a flight to SA if you think the cheaper one is dodgy. Sometimes you can get a cheaper deal by flying to Vegas and then getting another flight from there separately

I might check flights to Vegas anyway, the drive to Yosemite isn't that bad.

best I have found, SAS around £550 and Aer lingus 470.

Best posh class and posh prices are with virgin

Are you sure it wasn't just listing the prices for flying out and back separately? I checked Aer Lingus myself, and it was over £800.

Just checked again, it's about £800 still.

FWIW, I remember almost 30 years ago to the day I paid £449 for a return trip from Glasgow to San Francisco with Northwest Orient. So whichever way you look at it, the prices you're currently considering are good value!

In reply to 1poundSOCKS:

Flights to Salt Lake City in a month are £1050 with one stop so £800 seems about right to SFO which is a more common route and direct.

I bet you didn't have to put your liquids in a little plastic bag?

In reply to George Fisher:

£700 seems to be about what I'll be paying, probably best I can find from a seller that I trust.

Nope, but I did have to suffer from someone smoking nearby on one of the legs!

I'd rather have terrorists and no smoking.

Is that Manchester to Oakland? Flying out Sept 9th, back Oct 29th. Sorry about all the questions, it's just a lot cheaper than I can seem to get.

EDIT: Sept 10th, not 9th.

Have you checked prices for September 11th? I met a young American here who says he gets better deals on 'that' date.
OP 1poundSOCKS 10 Jul 2014
In reply to dek:
That date rings a bell!!!

Will check it anyway, thanks.

EDIT: Checked it on Skyscanner, same price, just more chance of getting hijacked.
