Did Whymper wear sun-glasses?

Well? And if not how did he (and others of that vintage) not go snow blind? I don't remember any comment on bright light in his writing.

They had sun glasses back then, but no decent sun block. Cloth masks were quite a popular way of avoiding sun burn, at the cost of looking like the invisible man.

The pictures I saw were in a book called "Invisible on Everest", but it just looked like a bunch of landscapes to me

I believe if you go back before lenses sun glasses were in effect a mask with slits for the eyes.
